Coco Chanel once famously said, “A women who doesn’t wear perfume has no future.” I suppose she was speaking in matters of creativity. To smell lovely is to appear lovely, and we choose our fragrances based on our own opinions from places of beauty and personality. Still, whether our scented tastes gravitate towards crisp, clean notes, or feminine floral tones or even earthy musks, there’s another major factor that goes into choosing the eau de parfum that’s right for us: the bottle.

Bespoke fragrance packaging (all the better for decorating our vanities), brings about truly innovative creativity — and has done so throughout history. In the 18th and 19th centuries, stunning hand-blown, hand-painted glass vessels and cut crystal decanters became an icon to the world of perfumery. Such craftsmanship stands strong today as brands encapsulate their scented creations in flacons of exquisite design from high-end to contemporary market places. Just think! In some cases (Chanel N5, obviously) stylistic perfume bottles are so appreciated we recognize their design as a signature… No label needed.

For perfume, the decoration possibilities are infinite. What’s inspiring, and down right amazing, is when a design beautifully conveys the idea behind the bottle — the message behind the fragrance — in such a way that it truly speaks to us, invigorating our creative side and encouraging us to feel chic, alluring and elegant. As we shall.

Here we’ve rounded up a few of our current favorite, wonderful perfumes that look beautiful, whilst exuding freshness, taste and vision in their own unique ways. There are so many amazing bottles out there — believe us, it was so hard to choose just a few!

With homage to avant-garde, this was the first fragrance by Christian Dior and embodies a dash of impertinence by bringing about daring qualities green floral chypre that blends Galbanum, Jasmine Sambac Absolute, Rose de Mai Absolute and Essence of Indonesian Patchouli. A delicate hue of pink, this fragrance mixes lemon, orange, jasmine, lotus blossom, lilac, amber and vetiver. It’s fresh like a spring spritzer and inspired by “the music in the brands DNA.” Therefore, the packaging is a whimsical-verses-edgy take on their patterned look.

Elizabeth and James Nirvana

Not afraid to think-outside-the-glass, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen of Elizabeth and James masterfully released their debut perfume. These two solid fragrances come with two faces: Nirvana White and Nirvana Black; white is a cool, calm approach to florals (girly) and black for sandalwood, vanilla and violet (a masculine edge). These beautiful flacons, designed by the sisters, were inspired by a vintage keepsake of their own personal collection — classic and timeless, yet perfectly modish.

Of course, one must include Chanel in any perfume round up. As part of the fragrances Les Exclusifs series, Chanel continues to delicately and subtly pull and shape the tone of their ionic bottle to form cases that reflect newer scents. In such, the attention to detail is as astute as the precise nostril tones that compose these elusive scents. In particular, Misia is a rose, violet and leather composition that mimics the scent of a theater’s backstage atmosphere. It’s a bold, strong scent that classically powdery.

Chloé Love Story

Inspired by a love story. In the epitome of a Chloé female, this story starts when a male onlooker sees her and is fascinated by her classic beauty, contemporary confidence and grace, he chases after… As a symbol of their affection there is a padlock, her fragrance. A precious jewel magnified by pleated glass. The delicate touch of a ribbon knotted nonchalantly at its side represents the modern and refined Chloé attitude. This smell is so sweet! And very romantic. [image via Love Story Tumblr]

Fashion_Avenue-bond-no-9-new-york-best-perfume-bottlesBond N9 Fashion Avenue

For the first time in fragrance history, a major, full-blown fragrance collection was launched as an homage to a great city. The Bond No. 9 collection of women’s, men’s, and unisex eaux de parfum, has a dual mission: restore artistry to perfumery, and mark every New York neighborhood with a scent of its own. I love the Fashion Avenue perfume, complete with its signature Bond N9 bottle that’s stripped down to the mere glass, allowing attention to focus on their signature silhouette — the décor, color and applique of this bottle is always changing, but its structure remains fashionable throughout each new collection and limited edition. For this particular edition, it’s the scent of the street that breathes the air of next year’s styles. Fresh, sparkling, go-getter floral exuberance, in bed with dewy greens, and caressed with a whiff of sexy sultriness.

Diptyque Eau Mohéli

A true dresser-upper, Diptyque’s range of perfumes offer a clear, distinctive mark across both design and scent. For their packaging, the oval labels echo the shape of an 18th-century medallion, a pattern found on the Prétorien fabric designed by Desmond Knox-Leet in 1963: The broad oval pattern suggests the shields of ancient Rome. It is an emblematic shape, perpetually reinvented and found on all products made by diptyque. For the Eau Mohéli, the French house embraces ylang-ylang flowers and leaves, pink peppercorn, ginger and vetiver — it’s exotic and wild!
